[email protected] Below is some of my story I am a Grower of Natural Fresh Produce, Small Fruits. Horticulturalist Believe in preserving the past for a better future. With that being said, I started out being a ground maintenance person along with doing landscaping. Grown up with vegetable along with Raspberries growing in our back yard. My Grandfather was a self taught horticulture's enjoyed breeding nut trees, grafting like a tomatoes on top a potato below. Have been to collage twice learning about horticulture which has been a great help with understanding how things work. In collage was taught how to do thing not in an organic or natural way. But doing the landscaping work and trying to kill what needed to kill I learned there must be a better way of doing this. With using the ways that my father used to grow things, along with some reading and working with the older man that lived next door used. I have learned how to grow very good produce without the use of none natural ways of growing the produce. As to the hours of my day or when I start that day or end that day, that would depend on the time of the year. In the winter there is no set start of or end of that day. In the summer time there are often things that must be done real early in the day therefore I up early and out to do those things. Would like to have 7 hours of sleep, but often do not get that. Where is your farm? The farm is locate close to Sedgewick which is in central Alberta Canada I did start out using a BSC Tiller it did a super job of making some very nice soil to growing things in. But after it had died and other factors that where going on in my life there was no funds for another one. The shovel came out and replaced the tiller. Now that I have been doing things this way for some years now. I would not go back to using the tiller. There is less weeds, the crops are as good if not better than they were with the tiller. As I have read in some old books the cost of the machines along with caring for them has cost farmer’s way to much of their income. People think it would be too much work doing it thing way, but I had no choice but to do it this way and have been blessed to not have the smoke form the tiller being going into me, the earth is better without the machine running. I am not working to support the machine anymore. I will live longer this way and so will the rest. As to what vegetable and small fruits are being grown the list is long, Beans, Beets, bunching Onions, Carrot, Corn. Cucumber, Potato, Garlic, Herbs, Leek, Lettuce, Onion, Parsnips, Pea, Perpetual Spinach, Radish, Rhubarb, Shallots, Spinach, Summer Squash, Swiss Chard, Tomato, Winter Squash, along with Raspberries and Strawberries. Do raise some Poultry for their help as to feeding the garden soil. Along with I do enjoy birds and would and have wanted more of them. My best friend as a child was a big Rooster and have loved them ever after then. Did have other livestock but other factors in life that have happen we do not have them now. I am not much for working for someone or supporting them. With my love of plants and animals farming works very well. But as it was started with the landscaping and might still be doing that if there was the fund's to have done that. It taught or needed fewer funds to get the produce business going than was needed to fund the large jobs that the landscape business needed. Started growing the produce more than just what we needed in 1989 and have been doing this and selling the produce thereafter. What's the worst part of farming? Not sure there is a worst part of doing what is being done. I am having way too much fun to call this work, doing what I want as I want, without a time or place that I have to be at other than the Farmer’s Market to sell it. The other thing that is being done is saving seeds, I think of it as more of a personal interest than a crop. It has more or a lot to it that is personal, in college we learned about some of the greats that have given their lives to keep their seed collects from being destroyed. Then learn more about the DNA and the genes therein these great plants we have to enjoy. The next things is the fact that we are losing these things from our lives by the way the Seed Companies are doing things, therefore a great need for the saving of the seeds of the world. After learning these things I had a chance to work in the R & D of a seed company for one summer. This gave me a firsthand chance of working around some seed breeders and in and out of the cages and cold frames the seed was being produced in. How to clean that seed, store that seed, how the information that you seed given to you is made. It can be as easy as just leaving some of the pods the best shape and looking ones on the plant to save the seeds that are in them. Not all plants are so easy to save pure seeds from, some are easily crossed therefore the seed will not produce the same thing if it was grown for seed again. Some can be hand pollinated other would need to be caged to keep them from being cross pollinated. Have many of friends that work for the USDA in the States they have been willing to help me with their great knowledge of how to save seeds. Like some books tell you to put your seeds from squash into water to clean them, I did that it said to, but lost the seed by doing that. Just remove the seed from the squash laid them on some paper towels to dry. I grow many things that one would not find other than from a person like me. Those that enjoyed their food 100 years ago had much more to enjoy than we do these days. Each year the seed is grown out the seed remembers or learns more about there it has been grown. Therefore it is smarter, will do better than it did before. Therefore you get a better crop from that see than you would if it came from some other climate. The hours of the day makes a lot of difference to many of the crops, so after being grown in a climate it learns to know when or how fast it needs to mature to get it seed finished in the time it has to grow in. Therefore smarter, better, more enjoyable to the one that is going to eat it. This make me feel good and hope that those that are getting the seed enjoy them as much as. I enjoy grow the seed for them. One might question Sedgewick as a place to farm why so far away from the markets that the produce is being grown at. A good question when I moved here in 2001 my big place was the same price as one seven times smaller without a real house and a large barn. Over the years it has workout great paying way less taxes and selling just as much as I would living closer to the city. It’s peaceful the house is on top of a hill do my shopping in the city enjoy a good life without the noise that there is in and around the city. ----------------------------------------------------------- I've been wanting to build one of these for the chickens for many years.
